Your scale shows kilograms but the gym plan is in pounds. A UK doctor writes your weight in stone. A recipe wants ounces, a courier charges per kilogram and a jeweller quotes gold per tola. Converting kg to lbs and the other weight units is easy once you know a few exact numbers and a couple of traps.

This guide covers everyday body weight, cooking, shipping, gold and gems, and South Asian units, with worked examples for each. Every answer can be checked in the free Orixiva weight converter, which shows 15 units at once, a pounds-and-ounces split and a stones-and-pounds split.

KG to lbs, stone, ounces and tola with the free Orixiva weight converter

Key takeaways

  • 1 pound (lb) = 0.45359237 kg exactly, so 1 kg ≈ 2.2046 lb.
  • To convert kg to lbs, multiply by 2.2046. To convert lbs to kg, divide by 2.2046 (or multiply by 0.4536).
  • 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 stone = 14 lb, and 1 oz ≈ 28.35 g.
  • Gold uses the troy ounce (31.10 g), which is heavier than the everyday ounce. 1 tola = 11.66 g.
  • The Orixiva weight converter covers 15 units, from micrograms to tonnes, and shows how each answer was worked out.

Weight or mass? A quick, useful difference

In daily life “weight” means how heavy something is in kilograms or pounds. Scientists call that mass. Strictly, weight is the force of gravity on a mass, measured in newtons. NIST’s page on the kilogram explains this difference. Your mass is the same on the Moon; your weight there is about one sixth.

All the units in this guide (kilograms, pounds, ounces, stone, tola) measure mass, which is what scales, shops and couriers mean by weight. That is also what the Orixiva weight converter converts.

The exact numbers behind every weight conversion

Since 1959 the pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. Every other imperial unit follows from it, so these conversions are exact, not estimates.

Weight conversion factors: pound 0.45359237 kg, ounce 28.35 g, stone 6.35 kg, troy ounce 31.10 g
The numbers that power every kg to lbs conversion.
UnitExact valueHandy reverse
1 pound (lb)0.45359237 kg1 kg ≈ 2.2046 lb
1 ounce (oz) = 1/16 lb28.349523125 g100 g ≈ 3.527 oz
1 stone (st) = 14 lb6.35029318 kg1 kg ≈ 0.1575 st
1 troy ounce (oz t)31.1034768 g1 kg ≈ 32.15 oz t
1 metric tonne (t)1,000 kg1 t ≈ 2,204.6 lb

Metric mass units step by 1,000: 1,000 mg = 1 g, 1,000 g = 1 kg and 1,000 kg = 1 tonne.

How to convert kg to lbs

pounds = kilograms × 2.20462
  1. Write down the weight in kilograms, for example 70 kg.
  2. Multiply by 2.20462: 70 × 2.20462 = 154.32.
  3. Result: 154.3 lb, or 154 lb 5.2 oz.
Mental shortcutDouble the kilograms and add 10%. 70 kg → 140 → 140 + 14 = 154 lb. The exact answer is 154.3 lb, so the shortcut is within about 0.2%.

Pounds and ounces in one go

Kitchen scales and baby weights are often written as pounds and ounces. The converter shows a Pounds + ounces line for every result. A newborn weighing 3.5 kg is 7.716 lb, which is 7 lb 11.5 oz, because 0.716 × 16 = 11.5 oz.

Bathroom scales sold in the US usually show pounds, those in the UK often offer stone, and most others show kilograms; many let you switch units with a button underneath, which is worth checking before you convert by hand.

How to convert lbs to kg

kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237 (or pounds ÷ 2.20462)
  • 150 lb: 150 × 0.45359 = 68.04 kg.
  • 200 lb: 200 × 0.45359 = 90.72 kg.
  • A 5 lb bag of flour: 5 × 0.45359 = 2.27 kg.
  • A 50 lb airline bag limit: 50 × 0.45359 = 22.68 kg, close to the 23 kg limit many airlines use.

Quick rule: half the pounds, minus 10%. 200 lb → 100 → 100 − 10 = 90 kg (exact: 90.7 kg).

Example: checking a gym planA plan says to squat 135 lb. Your gym’s plates are in kilograms. 135 × 0.45359 = 61.2 kg, so a 20 kg bar with 20 kg on each side (60 kg total) is the closest common setup.

Stone to kg and lbs (UK and Ireland body weight)

In the UK and Ireland people often give body weight in stone and pounds, such as 11 st 4 lb. One stone is 14 lb.

Stone and pounds to kg

  1. Convert to pounds: 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb.
  2. Convert to kg: 158 × 0.45359 = 71.67 kg.

KG to stone and pounds

  1. Convert to pounds: 80 kg × 2.20462 = 176.37 lb.
  2. Divide by 14: 12 stone, with 8.37 lb left over.
  3. Result: 12 st 8.4 lb.

The weight converter does this split automatically and shows a Stones + pounds line under every result. Tracking health goals? See BMI vs body fat vs TDEE and the free health and fitness calculators.

Grams to ounces and ounces to grams

ounces = grams ÷ 28.3495 · grams = ounces × 28.3495
  • 100 g of chocolate: 3.53 oz.
  • 250 g of butter: 8.82 oz.
  • 8 oz steak: 8 × 28.35 = 226.8 g.
  • A 16 oz jar: exactly 1 lb, or 453.6 g.

Be careful with “fluid ounces” in recipes: they measure volume, not weight. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts. Our cups to grams chart lists ingredient by ingredient, and the cooking calculator handles the conversion for you.

Shipping is another place where grams, ounces and pounds meet. Carriers may also charge by size, so read how to reduce dimensional weight charges before you pack.

Tonnes, short tons and long tons

“Ton” means three different things, and mixing them up is a costly mistake in freight and trade:

Metric tonne (t)

1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb. Used almost everywhere for trade and shipping.

US short ton

2,000 lb, which is 907.18 kg. Used in the United States.

UK long ton

2,240 lb, which is 1,016.05 kg. Still seen in older UK and shipping documents.

A load of 20 short tons is 18.14 tonnes, while 20 long tons is 20.32 tonnes. Always check which ton a quote uses.

Gold, silver and gems: troy ounce, carat and grain

Precious metals and gems use their own units. The converter includes three of them:

  • Troy ounce (oz t): 31.1034768 g. Gold and silver prices are quoted per troy ounce. It is about 9.7% heavier than the everyday ounce (28.35 g), so never mix the two.
  • Carat (ct): exactly 200 mg, so 5 carats = 1 g. It measures the weight of diamonds and gems. It is not the same as karat (K), which is gold purity: 24K is pure gold and 18K is 75% gold.
  • Grain (gr): 64.79891 mg. Used for bullets, arrows and some medicines. 7,000 grains make one pound.
Example: a 1 kg gold bar1,000 g ÷ 31.1034768 = 32.15 troy ounces. If gold is priced per troy ounce, multiply that price by 32.15 to estimate the bar’s value.
Gold weight units: tola 11.66 g, troy ounce 31.10 g, carat 0.2 g compared
Gold and gem units compared in grams.

Tola and maund: South Asian weight units

The tola is still widely used for gold in Pakistan, Nepal, parts of India and the Gulf jewellery trade. The maund is used for crops such as wheat and cotton.

UnitValue used by the converterUseful equivalents
1 tola11.6638038 g180 grains, or 3/8 troy ounce
10 tola116.638 gA common gold bar size
1 kg85.735 tola32.15 troy ounces
1 maund37.3242 kgAbout 82.29 lb, or 3,200 tola

These values follow Pakistan’s metric standards. Some local markets round the tola or use a regional maund, so confirm the unit before you buy or sell.

Example: gold rate per tola to per gramIf gold is priced at 250,000 per tola, divide by 11.6638: about 21,434 per gram. Multiply by 10 for the 10-gram rate (214,340).

Milligrams and micrograms: small weights in health and science

Medicine labels, supplements and lab work use tiny metric units. The converter starts at the microgram, so these are easy to check:

  • 1 g = 1,000 mg. A 500 mg tablet is 0.5 g.
  • 1 mg = 1,000 µg (micrograms, sometimes written mcg). A 25 µg dose is 0.025 mg.
  • 1 grain ≈ 64.8 mg, which you may still see on some older medicine labels.
Take care with dosesMixing up mg and µg means a factor of 1,000. Use the converter to understand a label, and always follow the dose your doctor or pharmacist gives you.

Luggage and parcels

Airlines and couriers quote limits in kilograms in most countries and in pounds in the US. A 23 kg checked bag limit is 50.7 lb; a 7 kg cabin bag limit is 15.4 lb. Weigh your bag at home and convert before you travel to avoid excess fees.

Getting an accurate reading before you convert

A conversion is only as good as the number you start with. For body weight, weigh yourself at the same time of day, on a hard floor, with similar clothing. For parcels, put the scale on a flat surface and press tare (zero) before adding a box or bowl. Kitchen scales usually show grams and ounces, so switching the display can save a conversion altogether. If two scales disagree, check them with something of known weight, such as a sealed 1 kg bag of sugar.

How to convert weight in Excel or Google Sheets

For a list of weights, use the CONVERT function, available in both Excel and Google Sheets. In Microsoft’s CONVERT reference, the pound is “lbm” (pound mass), not “lb”. Google Sheets accepts most of the same unit codes.

ConversionFormula
KG to lbs=CONVERT(A2,"kg","lbm")
Lbs to kg=CONVERT(A2,"lbm","kg")
Grams to ounces=CONVERT(A2,"g","ozm")
KG to stone=CONVERT(A2,"kg","stone")
Short tons to kg=CONVERT(A2,"ton","kg")

Spreadsheets do not include tola or maund. For those, divide grams by 11.6638 (tola) or kilograms by 37.3242 (maund), or use the weight converter.

How to use the free weight converter (step by step)

  1. Open the weight converter. Go to the Orixiva weight / mass converter, one of 14 converters in the unit converter.
  2. Type your value. Decimals, fractions (1/2), scientific notation (2.5e3) and sums such as 11*14+4 (stone and pounds as pounds) all work.
  3. Choose From and To units. Pick from microgram, milligram, gram, kilogram, metric tonne, ounce, pound, stone, US short ton, UK long ton, carat, grain, troy ounce, tola and maund.
  4. Read the result. It updates as you type and shows both rates (1 kg = 2.2046 lb and 1 lb = 0.4536 kg), plus pounds-and-ounces and stones-and-pounds lines.
  5. Check the working. “How it was calculated” shows your value turned into kilograms, then into the target unit.
  6. See every unit. A table lists the same weight in all 15 units, so one entry answers kg, lbs, oz and tola at once.
  7. Adjust, save and share. Set significant figures or decimal places and notation under Display options. Swap the units, copy the result, download it as TXT or print it. Recent conversions can be exported as a CSV file.

The converter runs in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing uploaded.

Mistakes to avoid when converting weight

Using the wrong ounce

Gold priced per ounce means the troy ounce (31.10 g). Using 28.35 g undervalues gold by almost 10%.

Confusing carat and karat

Carat (ct) is a gem’s weight. Karat (K) is gold purity. A “2-carat ring” describes the stone, not the gold.

Mixing ton types

Short, long and metric tons differ by up to 12%. Freight quotes and spec sheets should say which one they mean.

Rounding 2.2 too early

Using 2.2 instead of 2.20462 gives 220 lb for 100 kg instead of 220.46. Fine for a chat, not for a medicine dose, a lab sample or a large shipment.

Forgetting the container

Weigh a bowl, box or bag first and subtract it, or press tare. A 400 g box can turn a 4.6 kg parcel into a 5 kg one, which may push it into a higher shipping band. Convert the final weight, not a figure with the packaging guessed.

Treating fluid ounces as ounces

Fluid ounces measure volume. Only for water and similar liquids does 1 fl oz weigh close to 1 oz.
